Step by Step, Bite by Bite

"Mark has shown incredible dedication, working 5 days a week for over a year to reclaim his independence." Amy, Rehab Director

Mark’s stroke left him bed-bound and unable to eat safely, but he had one goal in mind: getting back to Thanksgiving dinner.

Mark arrived at Maryville after a stroke left him needing full support. He was bed-bound, relying on a Hoyer lift for transfers, and struggling with safe swallowing.

But from the beginning, Mark had a clear goal: to walk into Thanksgiving dinner.

So his therapy team built a plan around that. Physical and occupational therapy focused on rebuilding strength, balance, and control. Speech therapy worked on swallowing, helping him safely return to the foods and drinks he enjoyed.

Week after week, he showed up, and the progress followed:

  • Going from bed-bound to walking 60 feet with support
  • Regaining strength and movement on his right side
  • Advancing from thickened liquids back to thin liquids

By the time Thanksgiving approached, the goal that once felt far away was within reach.
Mark wasn’t just stronger; he was walking.

And more importantly, he was walking into a moment that mattered to him. Because progress isn’t just about movement — it’s about returning to the moments that make life feel like yours again.
